Chemists define it as a by-product of boiling sodium salts of fatty acids. But to us, it is simply a soap to wash off dirt. Have you ever wondered where else can we use soap aside from showering?

That idea brings us to this article. Here you will find 10 simple ideas of soap uses.

1.	Detect gas leaks: Mix liquid soap with water then rub the solution on a suspect pipe. When bubbles form, you may have a gas leak.
2.	Drive nails easily: Rub the nail shank on a bar of soap to make nails slide easier on the wood.
3.	Remove wallpaper glue easier: Mix liquid soap with warm water. Using a sponge, scrub the walls with the solution, your old wallpaper will come off easily.
4.	Drive away garden bugs: Keep garden bugs away from plants by mixing liquid soap and water and spray it on the leaves’ undersides.
5.	Clean window sills: You can run the wet edge of a bar soap along your window sills to wipe away the dirt.
6.	Stuck zippers: You can rub a bar of soap along the zipper’s teeth to loosen it.
7.	Remove a broken bulb: If a bulb breaks while it is still screwed in, do not attempt to remove it with your bare hands. First turn the power off. Insert the corner of a large, dry soap bar into the socket. Give it a few turns and that bulb will unscrew in no time.
8.	Tired of dog fleas?: Try putting a few drops of dish soap and water on a plate. Then position the plate on the floor next to a lamp. Fleas will be attracted to the light and they will jump on the plate and eventually drown.
9.	Use it as car freshener: Place a little piece of your favorite-smelling bath soap in a mesh bag and hang it from your rear view mirror.
10.	Keep stored clothes smelling fresh:
Stack your favorite scented soap bar into closet to keep those seasonal clothes smelling fresh or tuck it in your luggage for sweet-smelling clothes when you travel.

So what are you waiting for? Put these tips to the test right away. You’ll be surprised at how a simple soap could make your life easier.

While the soap’s original objective is to remove dirt from our skin, there has been a remarkable evolution of this simple cleaning agent. There is a wide array of soap types, scents and textures that consumers can choose from.

The soap, as a skin care or beauty product has become popular for many years. Beauty soaps are likely to feature attractive fragrances; they also carry ingredients to address a variety of skin type issues. There are soaps specifically for oily skin types, dry skin types, etc. Still, there are beauty soaps to treat various skin ailments such as acne. Beauty soaps that whiten skin are also very popular.

Despite the popularity of beauty soaps, conventional soaps remain a staple in every home. These are the soaps that we use mainly to remove dirt from our skin. We use them to wash our hands or when taking a showering. They come in liquid, bar or gel form and they are usually scented. Some soap has moisturizers to prevent having dry skin.

Another type of soaps is the antimicrobial soaps. They are formulated to destroy or inhibit the growth of microorganisms. These are popular among hospitals.

The antiseptic soaps fight bacterial invaders of the body. The most popular form is the hand sanitizers. These usually come in handy when you’re out of the house and there is a need for you to wash or clean your hand even without the use of soap and water. Hand sanitizers usually come in small bottle containers so they can conveniently fit your purse.

Laundry soaps are designed to clean clothes. They come in bar or powder form.

The dish soaps or dishwashing detergents are formulated for kitchen use. They come in liquid and powder form.

Now that you’re armed with this information, you are now ready to shop for soaps according to what your family needs.

Some people use normal soap to wash their hair. It’s true. There are people who do not use shampoo or conditioner, and instead use normal soap to cleanse their hair. You might wonder, can you really use soap for your hair? Of course, you can!

There are ingredients in soaps that make it great to use as a shampoo bar. Handcrafted bar soaps are wonderful. They are gentler and contain natural glycerin which promotes moisture. Your hair will have more bounce and will feel healthier. Soaps typically contain castor oil and/or Shea butter. It really gives great lather.

When you use soap to wash your hair, you can actually feel no residue that’s left on your hair. It rinses out completely and leaves hair squeaky clean. It is best to use natural handcrafted soaps rather than commercial soaps. Because sometimes commercial soaps leave residue on your hair.

Soaps with olive oil and castor oil will provide a good conditioning for your hair and scalp. You’ll also discover that it rinses out fast.

Some people have tried liquid soaps for their hair and they work as good as the bar soaps. Liquid Castile soap is a favorite. This is a soap made by the saponification of olive oil and only glycerin is left in. It surely proves to be an efficient degreasing agent for the hair and the skin.

As with the human skin, we also have different hair types. And as always, your own experience will prove to be your best guide to almost everything. You will have to find out for yourself what product would best suit you. Some products could work for me but not for other people. It is always wise to consider your hair type.

Some recommendations may not come with a professional point of view; they are just based on a consumer’s experience. So it is best to consult a professional so you can use the best products for you.

How would you like to give out scented soaps as Christmas presents? Here’s great news, you can now do that with the soap kits and supplies that abound in the market today. It is easy to get cubes of glycerin soaps from crafts shops. By doing so, you can avoid inhaling lye by skipping the process of making scented soaps from scratch.

Now let’s start to get to work.

1.	Cut the glycerin cubes into small cubes to make the melting process faster. Melt the glycerin using a double boiler. You can also use the microwave to melt the glycerin cubes for about 45 seconds.
2.	Once melted, let the glycerin cool down a bit.
3.	Once the glycerin has cooled down to about 120F, you may now add your choice of fragrance. You can use various types of essential oils. To make the scented soap, you can add a few drops until your desired scent comes out. If you want to add colorant, you should do so after adding the fragrance. It is important to note that adding the fragrance after the colorant will alter the color, so it is wise to define the scent first.
4.	Use a flexible plastic mold and let stand for at least 40 minutes. Remove the mold once the soap has set. You now ready to wrap them to make a great gift.

There are actually a lot of scents to choose from for your scented soaps. You can use vanilla, rose, lavender, apple, cedar, honey, orange, citrus, black forest, sandalwood, plum, spice, coconut, peppermint or eucalyptus. These are just a few scents to consider when making your own scented soaps. When you are choosing a scent, you have to take into consideration where, when, what for or who would use the soap.

Now what are you waiting for? Get up there and start making scented soaps. Who knows you can even start a business out of it.

We always want to look good. That’s probably the reason why there are a lot of beauty products in the market today. But how do we really choose the best product to use?

A lot of products abound the market today. We see several advertisements about naturally-produced produced goods. So we arrive at the question, what is the best for us, an all-natural product or chemically-produced ones? Let’s take a look at some facts about natural vs. chemicals.

If you are a homemaker on a budget, you would certainly prefer commercial soaps because you can buy them at a larger quantity at a much lower cost. Unlike natural soaps that can be very expensive. But what if you have sensitive skin? Would you risk it? While it is true that natural soaps may cost higher than commercial soaps, when you consider your family’s health, it is well worth it. Don’t you think?

Chemicals! Skin is the largest organ of our body. Constant exposure to chemicals cannot be good for your health. Almost everyday, there are more allergies, skin problems, and different types of cancers – all because of the body’s continuous exposure to chemicals. It is common for most people that after continued use of commercial soap complain of developing dry skin. Glycerin promotes moisture. But soap companies take out this all important ingredient during their soap making process and instead use synthetic ingredients.

There is some commercial soap in the market today that says all-natural ingredients on their labels. But don’t be fooled! Some soap companies just add a small amount of natural products but don’t totally replace all the other synthetic ingredients. What you should do, as a consumer, is to read the labels completely and do your homework.

Natural soaps are filled with just the finest ingredients. They have herbs and natural essences that will surely be good to your skin.

Are you convinced? Next time you buy soap, think all-natural! Your skin would thank you for it.

Soaps are cleaning agents made by reacting alkali with naturally occurring fats or fatty acids. Most soap removes stain, grease and dirt because they have components known as surfactants or surface-active agents. These surfactants have a molecular structure that acts as link between soap and dirt particles.

Soap is most commonly used to clean the body. However, beauty soaps have gained popularity in recent years. Contrary to the claims of some cosmetic soap, they contain harmful chemicals that actually clog pores instead of cleaning the skin. Studies reveal that long term use of these beauty soaps can result to skin irritations, rashes, allergies, acne and many other skin disorders.

Because of the harmful effects of these so called beauty soaps, natural soaps were introduced. They are usually called herbal soap. Made from natural ingredients and essential oils in their whole form, herbal soaps are enriched with medicinal properties as a result of using herbs.

Here are four of the most popular herbal soaps in the market today:

1.	Neem Soap – Neem is an herb that works effectively against the excess sugar in our body which is the common cause or skin disorders. Neem blocks virus growth and provides germicidal and anti-allergenic. This soap is highly recommended to people who have acne and other skin problems because this soap is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and anti-parasitic.

2.	Tulsi or Basil Soap – Basil is commonly known in India as Tulsi. It is an herbal plant that has a lot of curative and medical properties. It purifies the blood and kills bacteria which make it effective in treating skin disorders. Basil soap also makes your skin smooth and clear.

By the time you finish reading this, you are more knowledgeable than you have ever been about soaps – a product that we use every single day.

But what really is that product we call soap? What is its composition – traditional and modern?

Soap, as defined, is a cleansing agent made from the interaction of fats and oils with alkali. In chemical terms, it is a salt composed of alkali metal, like sodium or potassium, and a mixture of fatty carboxylic acids. The common soap’s cleansing action is derived from its ability to surround oil particles, causing them to be dispersed in water and rinsed away. It has been widely used for centuries and is continues to be a popular cleansing agent and a mild antiseptic.

Records show that soap making was common in Italy and Spain during the 8th century. By the 13th century, soap making became popular in France. The common ingredients of soap in the olden times were the tallow of goats and wood ash (furnishing the alkali). It was the French who first produced soaps using olive oil. It was in the 1783 that a Swedish chemist accidently simulated a reaction that occurs in the present-day boiling process of soap making. He produced a sweet-tasting substance that was later to be named as glycerin. Not to be outdone, a French chemist discovered the chemical nature of the ingredients used in soap, the year was 1823.

Soap requires two main ingredients: fat and alkali. The alkali commonly used today is sodium hydroxide. Potassium hydroxide is also used because it creates a more water-soluble product than sodium-based soap, thus there is a product known as “soft soap.” Soap manufacturers of old simply boiled a solution of wood ash and animal fat while modern soap makers use fat that has been processed to produce fatty acids. Thereby eliminating a lot of impurities, producing a water byproduct instead of glycerin. Modern soap manufacturers also make use of additives to enhance texture, color and scent of soap.

So there you have it, some interesting facts about soap.

Do you always feel tired after a long day at work? Do you want to go to the spa to have a relaxing treatment but you do not have enough time, not to mention money? If your answer to both questions is yes, you should consider preparing your very own bath soaks in the comforts of your own home. Bath soaks are bath solutions that make bathing more relaxing and enjoyable.

You do not need to go to the spa to experience something as luxurious as a body treatment. All you need to do is to prepare your bath soak recipe and put it in your bathwater when it is time for you to take a bath.

To prepare your bath soak, you need some ingredients such as Epsom salts, baking soda, ground oatmeal, essential oils including lavender or mint, dried flower petals, ginger, and herbs such as thyme or rosemary. It might sound as you are cooking rather than preparing a solution for your bath but these ingredients are good for your skin and general well-being when mixed together.

If you are really busy and you do not have enough time to even mix the ingredients stated in the previous paragraph, you can also buy the solution from your nearest beauty shop or drugstore. This is easier and more convenient but you have to make sure that the ingredients are all-natural. Some people prefer preparing their own solution because they can choose the smell or aroma that they want or they can add certain oils that will help them treat some of their skin problems.

Once you have prepared your bathwater with the solution, you should submerge your whole body for a half hour to ensure that the natural ingredients are taking effect on your skin and body. Before you hop into the bathtub, you may want to consider playing soft music in the background or light some scented candles.

It was said that Cleopatra always took a bath in a bathtub filled with camel milk to maintain her smooth and creamy skin. This was a couple thousand of years ago. Now, what you can do instead of filling your bathtub with milk is to prepare milk baths.

Milk baths do not necessarily mean that you need to fill your bathtub with milk, which can cost you a lot of money especially if you do it everyday. You just need to add 2 to 4 cups of buttermilk or milk into your bathwater and soak your body for about half an hour. Make sure that you scrub your body thoroughly to remove any dead skin cells. You can use a small soft towel or loofah to scrub off your dead skin cells. Do not scrub too strongly or you will get scratches on your body parts.

Milk contains lactic acid. Lactic acid can exfoliate your skin by removing or dissolving the substance the holds your dead skin cells. It is important to dissolve this substance to have soft and smooth skin. And this is the job of the lactic acid in the milk. Yogurt also has lactic acid but it will not feel good if you put yogurt into your bathwater instead of milk.

You should enjoy the luxurious feeling that milk bath provides. Make sure that you relax yourself and you clean your body thoroughly. Once you are sure that all parts of your body are clean, you should rinse your body with clean water. You do not want to leave the milk on your skin because it can be sweet and sticky. You can rinse off the milk by standing under the shower. You should also clean your bathtub by wiping off the milk oil as soon as you can.
