Moisture is essential to the skin cells. There are many processes that occur in the skin such as transfer of fats, secretion of natural oil and repair of damaged cells. Each of these processes requires water.

Having a dry skin makes the person look older. This is because the skin has no water to help in discarding dead cells. Dry skin is also susceptible to lines because it lacks flexibility. More laugh lines and forehead lines appear. To avoid all these, proper moisturizing of the skin must be done.

How to moisturize

There are moisturizing creams that can be applied to the face and worn all-day. In fact, they help in easier application of make-up. Use a gentle moisturizing cream. Just put an ample amount on your fingertips, spread it evenly on your face and neck.

There also several moisturizing lotions that can be used for the rest of the body. Most have natural extracts such as aloe that helps skin regeneration and water keeping. Apply extra amounts on thin dry spots. These include the heels and elbows.

You can also make your own moisturizer. Prepare a mixture of sugar and olive oil. Smear it on your face and let it sit for a minute. Then, wash the solution away and pat dry with a towel. It is best to first consult a dermatologist if your skin is fine with the mixture.

Using these methods can give or retain your skin’s suppleness. It will shine a pinkish-healthy glow, making you look and feel younger.

Things to avoid

Excessive application of moisturizers can cause clogged pores. In effect, it may increase oil production especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin). This will result in blackheads and pimples.

The skin also naturally keeps moisture. Do not “over-wash” your face with soaps and cleansers. They may either strip the skin of moisture or over-stimulate the oil glands. This may result in a very dry or a very oily skin.

Finally, do not resort to alcohol-based astringents. Use it only if your face is extremely oily. Alcohol can strip the skin of its natural moisture.
